Manchester Community College is the administrative base for the Connecticut Community Colleges' Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Counselor Program (DARC). This is an Associate Degree program offered through the twelve community colleges and accredited by the Connecticut Board of Higher Education. Degrees are conferred through each student's home college in cooperation with Manchester Community College.

The program consists of 24 semester hours of specialty courses and 36 semester hours of general education credit. The specialty courses are taught at Gateway Community-Technical College, Manchester Community College and Tunxis Community College. Students register at their home college for one of the three class sites.

Saint Joseph's College presently offers a minor in Counseling for baccalaureate candidates to supplement their major area of concentration. A minor in counseling consists of 18 credits, 15 of which must be counseling courses.

The Counseling Institute of the Department of Counselor Education at Saint Joseph's College is a graduate program which aims at providing training for the mental health or human resource professional. Students may pursue a Master of Arts Degree, a Sixth Year Certificate, or a Certificate of Advance Graduate Study.

The Master of Arts in Counseling offers a core of counseling theory and practice plus a range of electives diverse enough to appeal to students of differing backgrounds and with diverse career goals. A student must choose one of the following tracks: generalists, addictions, aging, career/life planning, pastoral, or marriage and family counseling.

Saint Joseph's College also offers a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy and in Pastoral Counseling.

A Sixth Year Certificate is available to students already possessing a Master's Degree in Counseling or in an allied field to counseling. An individual program is designed to meet the student's own professional goals.

The University of Hartford presently offers a Master's Degree program in Counseling. The program provides opportunities to prepare for counseling positions in a variety of settings. Students may select an area of concentration from school, college, student development, mental health practice, career counseling, corrections, family, personnel, and gerontology. Internships are available in community-based programs.

The University also offers a Bachelor's Degree program in Human Services. This program prepares the student for a career of public or private community service from local to federal levels in agencies, businesses and industries serving a variety of human needs and resources. Possible career options may include employment in the following settings: advocacy programs, infant stimulation programs, day care/preschool settings, hospital child life, child and adult residential care, recreation, geriatrics, child/adolescent family support services, crisis intervention units, personnel, and community health services. There are courses in substance abuse available and may be applied to the program of study as electives. Undergraduate internships are also available in community-based programs.

The University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) presently offers an Associate of Arts in Social Services with a concentration in Substance Abuse. The program offers courses, which examine the resources, issues, and policies of the social service system. The program includes an internship in a social service agency. The diversity of agencies serving clients in Maine provides a range of choices for field placement opportunities.

UMA offers transfer agreements with the University of Maine at Farmington, which permits graduates of the Social Services program to transfer with junior standing into a bachelor program in Community Health Education, Early Childhood Education, or Rehabilitation.

Many students also transfer to the Bachelor of Arts program in Social Services offered at UMA.
UMA also offers a Certificate program in Substance Abuse Studies.

The University of Maine at Farmington presently offers a Bachelor of Science Degree in Rehabilitation Services. This program has an interdisciplinary and psychosocial focus. The major program components are: (1) foundation in the arts and sciences; (2) behavioral sciences, emphasizing life-span development and psychological functions; (3) rehabilitation courses; (4) a concentration of electives designed in response to a student's interest in health and human services; and (5) field learning that permits students to develop their skills under supervision in professional practice settings.

Graduates pursue careers in alcohol and drug rehabilitation, corrections, mental health, mental retardation, and services to the elderly, industrial rehabilitation, therapeutic recreation, child and family services, student personnel services, and residential care.

The University of New England presently offers Graduate Certificate Programs in Marriage and Family Therapy and Substance Abuse Counseling. These programs blend theory and research with role-playing and other practical clinical experience.

The Marriage and Family Therapy Certificate Program is offered at the post-Masters degree level. The curriculum is designed to meet academic requirements for licensing in the State of Maine and Accreditation Standards of the AAMFT (American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists).

Additionally, the curriculum is structured to be taken over one academic year and two, seven week summer sessions. Each semester is approximately 15 weeks. This offers the option of continuing education credits for licensed individuals who might wish to attend any of these courses. There are twelve core courses (thirty-six (36) semester hours), which comprise the complete Certificate.

The Substance Abuse Counseling Program is offered at the post-Bachelors degree level. The curriculum is designed to meet academic requirements for licensing in the State of Maine.

The curriculum is designed to be taken over one academic year plus one, seven-week summer session. Each semester is divided into two segments of approximately seven weeks each. This offers the additional option of continuing education during Fall and Spring semesters for licensed individuals, or post-graduate students completing licensing requirements. Students must complete ten courses (eighteen (18) semester hours) to achieve the Certificate requirements.

The University of Southern Maine presently offers a Master of Science Degree in Counseling with specialties in: Mental Health (Professional Counseling, Substance Abuse Counseling, and Clinical Counseling); Rehabilitation (Mental Health/Psychosocial Rehabilitation Technician III & IV Certificate Program); and School Counseling.

Depending on the specialty, the Counselor Education Program requires 48-60 credit hours of coursework, which includes core courses (21-24 credits) and required specialty courses and electives (24-36 credits). Each counseling student must complete an internship (600-1,200 hours), which provides an opportunity for students to integrate formal coursework with on-the-job experience in selected institutions. In addition to coursework, each counseling student must successfully complete both Part One (Qualifying Section) and Part Two (Synthesis Research Paper) of the comprehensive examination.

The professional counseling specialty requires a total of 48 credit hours of coursework. Individuals graduating from this specialty will be eligible to sit for the National Counselor Examination and meet requirements for professional counselor licensure in Maine.

The clinical counseling specialty requires a total of 60 credit hours of coursework, including 24 credit hours in core courses, 27 credit hours related to the specialty, and 9 credit hours of elective coursework, which may be in substance abuse counseling. During the final portion of their coursework, students will intern under the supervision of a licensed mental health worker. Individuals graduating from this specialty will be eligible to sit for the National Counselor Examination and prepare to be licensed in Maine as a Clinical Professional Counselor.

The rehabilitation specialty requires a total of 48 credit hours of coursework. Upon completion, students are eligible to sit for the Rehabilitation Counselor Certification Examination. This is the only program in northern New England accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education.

The psychosocial specialty requires a total of 48 credit hours of coursework. The program is particularly suitable for persons with baccalaureate degrees and experience in the mental health field who desire further training and certification in the psychosocial rehabilitation and National CRC (Certified Rehabilitation Counselor) registration. It is the only program of its kind in northern New England and is nationally accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE).

The Mental Health Rehabilitation Technician (MHRT) III program is especially suited for practitioners who currently work in the mental health system and who desire training in psychosocial rehabilitation, or for persons with prior graduate training who need flexible coursework to update their skills and knowledge in the psychosocial rehabilitation approach. Persons with a bachelor degree and one-year direct experience in the mental health field may apply for the five-course sequence.

The School Counseling Specialty requires a total of 48 credit hours of coursework. Upon completion, students are eligible for certification from the Department of Education in the area of school guidance and counseling (K-12). This program is one of three in New England to be accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).

Assumption College presently offers a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Social and Rehabilitative Services. The program provides a strong undergraduate foundation for graduate professional education in a number of helping service areas, including rehabilitation counseling, social work, clinical psychology, speech pathology, audiology, and special education. It prepares students for positions such as counselor intern, mental health specialist, caseworker or manager, therapeutic educator, or residential manager, in a wide range of human service agencies.

Students may take coursework in Social and Rehabilitation Services under four possible options:
Option One: The major in Social and Rehabilitative Services; Option Two: The program SR100-101 The Individual in the Community: The Helping Services. This option is open to Juniors and Seniors from all academic majors who want to become better acquainted with the field of Social and Rehabilitation Services; Option Three: a minor in Social and Rehabilitation Services. This option is open to students who have taken option two and who wish to further develop an understanding of persons who are disabled and disadvantaged, as well as career opportunities available in Human Services; and Option Four: electives. This option is open to any student who wishes to become knowledgeable in one or more specific areas of academic learning.

The Institute for Social and Rehabilitative Services has also developed a special five-year program entitling the student to a B.A. degree pus a graduate professional degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. Social and Rehabilitation Services (SR) majors enrolled in this program will be able to commence the tow-year graduate program in Rehabilitation Counseling in their senior year. Upon completion on one additional year of graduate study, the students will be awarded a Master of Arts degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, enabling them to take the exam for national certification as a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (C.R.C.).

Boston University presently offers a Bachelor of Science in Rehabilitation and Human Services, and an accelerated Bachelor of Science and Master of Science Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling.

Students in the Bachelor of Science program complete at least one-half of their coursework in the humanities and the sciences (social, biological, and behavioral). The remaining courses focus on the theory and practice of rehabilitation and human services. A two-day per week field experience of at least two semesters is required during the senior year.

The Combined Bachelor of Science and Master of Science honors program offers qualified Rehabilitation and Human Services students the chance to earn their MS in Rehabilitation Counseling at an accelerated pace. Students apply for admission to the program during the first semester of the senior year. Upon acceptance, they begin an accelerated program of graduate study.

Students who wish to become certified as a Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) must complete 48 credits of graduate-level courses over a two-year period. The program also enables students who wish to specialize in a particular area to take an additional year of specialized curriculum.

Also offered, is a Postgraduate Certificate Program in Alcoholism and Drug Abuse: Advanced Clinical Diagnosis, Intervention, and Treatment. The program is co-sponsored by the Boston University Alcohol and Drug Institute for Policy Training and Research, and the School of Social Work, Division of Continuing Education.

This program is designed for clinicians in social service, mental health, or private practice settings who want to enrich their skills in differential diagnosis, working with denial and other defenses, intervening with families, using psychotherapy with addicted clients, and long-term counseling techniques.

Participants will be accepted on the basis of their application and a group interview. Applicants must have a Master's degree in a clinical discipline with a minimum of one year of clinical experience.

Northeastern University presently offers a Master of Science Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. This two-year program helps to meet the professional training needs of individuals who work one-on-one with clients to develop and implement individual rehabilitation plans. Specializations are offered in the areas of deafness, industrial counseling, substance abuse, severe special needs, and corrections. Must have a Masters Degree.

The programs are individually designed in collaboration with an advisor to provide an appropriate combination of professional coursework and clinical experiences. Students completing coursework requirements approved and accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education are eligible to become Certified Rehabilitation Counselors. There are several areas of concentration in which a student may focus. The University of Massachusetts has three separate programs in addictions studies: (1) Alcohol and Substance Abuse Studies (ASAS) offers a Program of Study in alcohol/drugs to undergraduates from all majors. The curriculum is also delivered as a certificate program for non-degree students, whether or not they already hold an undergraduate degree. ASAS has an extensive internship component with placements in counselor and other service delivery settings. The ASAS program is administered in the College of Arts and Sciences. (2) The Graduate Department of Counselor Training offers a Master of Education and a Certificate of Advanced Study (CAGS) containing extensive specialization courses on alcohol/drug counseling, which also includes an internship component. This degree or CAGS certificate are administered in the College of Education. (3) The Division of Continuing Education offers an addictions studies curriculum containing an internship component. This curriculum does not carry college credit and is offered to non-matriculating students. Continuing education students can also take courses in the ASAS curriculum for college credit.

The Addiction Counselor Education Program is a Human Services training program for individuals employed in alcohol and other drug treatment and for those individuals interested in entering the field. Westfield State College offers this professional development sequence combining academics with practical experience.

The program, is a one-year certificate program with classes evenings and weekends. The series consist of five courses. Each course carries three Continuing Education Units (CEUs); the pre-practicum workshop carries two CEUs; the practicum carries ten CEUs. Students who successfully complete the program are awarded 27 CEUs (270 Contact Hours).

This certificate program is offered at two sites including the Westfield Campus and at our campus in Worcester at AdCare Hospital of Worcester. (Program in Worcester slightly different in make up, but also offers 27 CEU’s).

Antioch New England Graduate School presently offers a Master of Arts Degree in Counseling Psychology with a concentration in Substance Abuse/Addictions Counseling, and in Marriage and Family Therapy. The Graduate School also offers a Master of Education in Substance Abuse Counseling.

Students in their second year of the M.A. Counseling Psychology program may choose to concentrate in substance abuse/addictions counseling. Students choosing this option take two advanced focus courses in addictions counseling as well as two other focus courses from among the various alternatives in counseling psychology. Additional requirements for this concentration include a one-credit weekend course in Psychopharmacology of Substance Abuse and one yearlong internship in an addictions counseling setting.

For students choosing to pursue a Master of Education in Substance Abuse Counseling, the degree requirements are the same as those for the M.A. program in Substance Abuse/Addictions Counseling, plus additional electives.

Students interested in the M.A. program in Marriage and Family Therapy, are introduced to the paradigmatic shift to systems thinking and to the basic theories of individual and family process, development and dysfunction, surveys of approaches to family assessment and treatment, practical skills in observing and intervening in family systems, macro-systemic issues and intervention, and issues of diversity and oppression, in the first year.

In the second year, students work on advanced topics, including research, couples' therapy, family violence and substance abuse. A twelve-month internship, comprising 1,000 hours of clinical practice, is also required.

The Marriage and Family Therapy program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Education of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.

This course of study emphasizes the prevention of physical and emotional distress and the promotion of self-awareness and healthy lifestyle choices.

The Associate of Science Degree program, with a concentration in Chemical Dependency, provides a basic foundation for further education in alcohol/substance abuse studies. This program requires a minimum of 24 credits in general education, 18 credits in concentration requirements, and 18 credits, which are electives.

The Chemical Dependency Certificate program certifies that those candidates, who successfully complete the program, have studied a wide range of health issues related to chemical abuse and dependency; and have demonstrated the skills necessary for assisting clients toward the primary goal of recovery. Anyone interested, or actively working, in one of the helping professions may be a candidate for the certificate. Courses taken include required classes and electives, primarily in the human studies area. This program is offered through the Division of Continuing Education at Keene State College.

NH Technical College: Concord, presently offers an Associate in Science Degree in Human Services. This Human Service program provides professional Addiction Counseling education and field experience for students who seek careers as human service workers with a specialty in substance abuse counseling. The first year of study covers a broad range of courses in both the human service and alcohol and drug abuse. In the second year, students specialize in addiction counseling and receive extensive clinical training.

The degree of Associate of Science with a major in Human Service with specialization in Addiction Counseling is awarded upon successful completion of the two year program. Graduates of the program serve in positions in public and private general psychiatric hospitals, youth and group homes, alcohol, drugs, and addictions treatment centers, mental health and social services agencies and employee assistance programs.

River College presently offers a Master Degree program in the following areas: Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Counselor Education, and Educational Studies with a concentration in Counseling. The Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and the Master of Education program in Education Studies with a concentration in Counseling, both require courses in Substance Abuse Counseling. Beginning Fall 1994, a Master Degree program will be offered in Bilingual and Cross Cultural Counseling with a concentration in Substance Abuse.

The Counseling Programs provide a theoretical and experiential framework designed to prepare the student for a future career in counseling. Classrooms include clinical laboratories with one-way mirrors that provide for the development of strong practitioner skills. Audio and videotaping are emphasized throughout the program.

A prerequisite experience in counseling must be completed before a student applies for candidacy. The student must volunteer in the field of human services for 50 hours. This experience must be documented by his/her supervisor and presented at the time of candidacy. Students who currently work in human services may request a waiver; however, documentation must be submitted confirming their present position. No previous work experience will be accepted in lieu of these volunteer hours.

To meet the increasing demand for trained professionals in a variety of human services, the Department of Human Services offers a comprehensive training program, based upon both classroom and field work experiences, leading to an Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree. Training is offered in areas of child development and family relations, education, special education, social work, mental health, substance abuse, and gerontology.

A minimum of 60 credits is required to graduate with an A.A. degree in Education or Social Services.

Roger Williams University presently offers a Certificate program in Chemical Dependency through the Social and Health Services Program. This is a five-course program designed to provide knowledge and skills relevant to the provision of direct services to the chemically dependent and their families. The courses required for the certificate have been approved by the Rhode Island Joint Education Committee for 45 contact hours toward chemical dependency certification. Students may apply this certificate as elective credit toward the Social and Health Services Bachelors Degree program.

Qualified students may take challenge examinations, available through the Social and Health Services Program, to meet some of the course requirements. However, 5 units of credit (equivalent to 180 instructional hours and 128 practicum hours toward certification) must be completed to obtain the certificate.

Goddard College presently offers a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Master's Degree program in Psychology and Counseling. The program of study is a self-design program by the student. With the approval of the college advisor, the program may concentrate in the area of chemical dependency. The student attends one week of classes at the beginning of the semester and then proceeds independently, meeting with their advisor at specified times throughout the semester.

Studies may concentrate in all aspects of psychology, for example, counseling and psychotherapy, community, social, or child psychology, and personality growth and development. Students seeking licensure or certification as psychologists or counselors are assisted in planning studies to meet the requirements of various states licensing agencies.
