| Tobacco Cessation: Best Practices |

The Addiction Technology Transfer Center of New England, funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), is offering an on-line course on the cessation of tobacco use. Complications from chronic tobacco use is a leading cause of death in the United States and in many countries around the world. Proven clinical treatment strategies are available right now that are designed to help people who want to quit with the resources to stop tobacco use. Unfortunately, billions of dollars are spent each year to promote tobacco use and to initiate new smokers to this deadly habit. This course is designed to provide treatment professionals with clinical tools that can assist them in helping their clients to quit tobacco use. It will also clinicians with information regarding the process of obtaining certification as a tobacco cessation specialist. This course will be taught by Steven Horovitz, a Master's Level, Rhode Island State licensed Chemical Dependency Professional with over 15 years experience providing Substance Abuse, Violence Prevention, Batterer's Intervention, HIV/AIDS, Mental Health Counseling education and training. Mr. Horvitz maintains strong ties with the substance abuse recovery community. He is the President of Rhode Island CAREs, a community based group of people in recovery from substance abuse; Chairperson of the Rhode Island Division of Substance Abuse Independent Peer Review Committee; A member of the Rhode Island Planning Group Committee for HIV; A member of the Rhode Island Attorney General's Drug Court Advisory Board and Domestic Violence Training Committee; the Rhode Island Council of Community Mental Health Centers Case Management Training Team; and participates in the Rhode Island Batterer's Intervention Oversight Committee. Mr. Horovitz is currently the Training Director of the NRI Community Services Substance Abuse, HIV/AIDS, Violence Prevention and Intervention programs.

Course Requirements This is a four-week course, beginning on May 8, 2006. Requirements are:

Assignments can be accessed at the participant's convenience. The total cost of this course is $40.00. A full refund is available up until the posting of the second lesson (May 18, 2006), after which there will be no refunds. ACCREDITATION This four-week course, which begins May 8, 2006, has been approved by the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) for 8 educational credits. It is being provided by the Addiction Technology Transfer Center of New England, which is accredited as a NAADAC Approved Education Provider (#000151). This course meets the qualifications for 8 hours of continuing education credit for MFCC's and/or LCSW's as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (PCE#1917). This course is also approved by the Connecticut Certification Board (CCB) for eight Category 1 continuing education for Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADC's). The CCB is an IC&RC affiliate.
